Italy: VAT Treatment of Wheeled Ultrasound Equipment Sales Due to COVID-19
The Italian Revenue Agency published Letter No. 388/2022, clarifying the VAT treatment of the sale of transportable ultrasound equipment and associated components due to COVID-19.
Background
The taxpayer manufactures globally renowned diagnostic equipment, including ultrasound scanners on wheels and associated accessories. He asked for clarity on the applicability of the lower VAT rate to the sale of certain scanners and accessories.
The tax authorities clarified that:
- The sale of some manufactured items is subject to a reduced VAT rate of 5% starting 1 January 2021
- The VAT exemption applies to certain goods and services completed until December 31, 2020.
- The discounts apply to the accessories of wheeled ultrasound equipment, subject to certain requirements.
