The Swiss Federal Tax Administration released an updated VAT guide on January 30, outlining key principles effective from January 1. The document provides details on VAT rates, tax liabilities, exemptions, and compliance requirements.

Key updates include:

  • General VAT framework: The guide explains how VAT operates, including general provisions and the determination of the place of delivery and supply.
  • VAT rates: Effective January 1, 2024, the standard VAT rate is 8.1%, while a reduced rate of 2.6% applies to specific goods and services. A special rate of 3.8% is in place for accommodation services from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2027.
  • Taxation scope: The guide covers domestic tax and group taxation, specifying tax liabilities for companies, waivers of exemption from tax liability, a list of tax-exempt services, and the allocation of services.
  • Tax procedures: It provides information on input tax deductions, receipt tax, import tax, tax collection, billing methods, and reporting obligations, along with relevant limitation periods.
  • Penalties: The document details the penalties applicable for noncompliance.

The updated guide serves as a reference for businesses and taxpayers to understand their VAT obligations under the revised framework.
