The Japanese National Tax Agency outlined the eligibility conditions for businesses seeking a grace period on tax payments due to economic hardship.
Key points of the announcement include:
Application for grace period:
Businesses may apply for a one-year grace period to defer tax payments, provided specific conditions are met.
Extension of grace period:
The initial grace period can be extended by an additional year depending on the taxpayer’s circumstances.
Proof of payment intention and hardship:
Taxpayers must demonstrate both an intention to fulfill their tax obligations and that paying in a lump sum would endanger their business operations.
Collateral requirements:
Businesses are generally required to offer collateral for the deferred amount, unless providing such security would severely impact business continuity.
Impact during the grace period:
During the approved period, delinquent tax surcharges will be reduced, and no asset seizures or liquidations will occur.
The announcement also provides examples to illustrate situations considered as economic hardship under the guidelines.
