France: Consultation on new rules for import VAT payment and declaration

Spread the love

French General Directorate sets a consultation regarding new rules for the declaration and payment of import VAT. Starting from 1 January 2022, the declaration, collection, and control of VAT applied to imports will be now under the Directorate of Public Finance (DGFiP).

The consultation period will be up to 15 April 2023 with the following proposed rules:

  • Transactions under the scope of VAT Imports;
  • Place of import regulations for taxable transactions;
  • Intra-community transactions where VAT is not applicable;
  • VAT deductions conditions on import transactions;
  • Identifying VAT import liability for goods and imports under intra-community acquisitions.

The changes aim to improve the payment of VAT by automatically transferring information to the DGFiP, which will allow for targeted controls and accurate pre-filling of the turnover declaration, which the taxpayer will be responsible for verifying.
