Brexit: Checklist for EU businesses exporting to the UK in 2021 – Free trade agreement

Spread the love

The EU released a checklist in order to serve as a guide for businesses trading between the EU and the UK post Brexit under Free trade agreement rules.

What to take under consideration when exporting to the UK under the Free trade agreement?

  • The first step is to verify that you are indeed an exporter as defined by the TCA (producer or trader) and of course located in the EU.
  • Check if your products are subject to import duty for importing in the UK.
  • Do your products originate from the EU? Check carefully the rules of origin laid down in the Free trade agreement between the EU and UK.
  • If you are exporting products of a value over 6000 then you need a REX number and registration in the EU registered exporters system.
  • You will require enough information to provide as proof of origin from your suppliers. You can make your statements by gathering your supplier’s declarations.
  • You will need to draft a contract with your Importer in the UK and decide whether they will claim preferential tariff treatment on the basis of a statement of origin made by you or on importer’s knowledge.
  • Create the statement of origin which precisely identifies the products and their origin.
  • The statement of origin and every record will need to be kept for a minimum of 4 years in order to be able to be verified in the future.
  • Make sure the products are not altered in any way during transportation.
  • Provide the statement of origin to the UK importer and be ready for a UK customs verification which will need to be verified by the customs authority of the Member state in which you have been registered in REX.
